Description

Learn how to make rich and creamy caramel using just a can of sweetened condensed milk.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (14 ounces / 397 g) sweetened condensed milk
  • Water, enough to fully cover the can by 1–2 inches
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Pinch of sea salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. PREPARE THE CAN: Remove the paper label from the unopened can of sweetened condensed milk. Check that the can is sealed and free from dents or damage.
  2. PLACE IN POT: Lay the unopened can on its side in a deep saucepan or pot. Positioning it on its side helps promote even cooking.
  3. ADD WATER: Fill the pot with water until the can is fully submerged with at least 1–2 inches of water above the top of the can.
  4. BRING TO SIMMER: Place the pot over medium heat and bring the water to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat as needed to maintain a steady simmer. Avoid a rapid boil.
  5. COOK THE CARAMEL: Simmer for 2 to 3 hours. Cook for 2 hours for a lighter golden caramel with a softer consistency. Cook for 3 hours for a deeper amber color and thicker texture.
  6. MONITOR WATER LEVEL: Check the pot every 30 minutes to ensure the can remains fully submerged. Add hot water as needed to keep the water level consistent.
  7. COOL COMPLETELY: Turn off the heat after the cooking time is complete. Allow the can to cool fully in the water before removing it. Cooling completely prevents pressure buildup and ensures safe handling.
  8. OPEN AND STIR: Once the can is completely cool, carefully open it. Transfer the caramel to a bowl and stir until smooth and creamy.
  9. ADD OPTIONAL FLAVOR: Stir in vanilla extract for added warmth or a pinch of sea salt for a salted caramel variation, if desired.

Notes

  • This method is safe when the can is left unopened until cooking is complete.
  • Make sure to keep the water level high during the cooking process.
